bring back PONG PAGONG!

What ever happened to Batibot?
I was part of the generation who grew up with Pong Pagong, Kiko Matsing, Kuya Bodgie and Ate Sienna. I used to sing along to songs like “Kapitbahay” and “Ulan”…
I remember that there was a time when Pong Pagong and Kiko Matsing suddenly “disappeared” from Batibot. I found out later that the puppets were taken back by the Children’s Television Workshop who originally produced the show. (It was kinda surprising to find out that the very Pinoy show I grew up with was originally co-produced by the same group who produced Sesame Street. According to some websites, it used to be called Sesame! with a Filipino-English format.) The show was cancelled on 2000, when GMA7 decided to re-format. The weird thing is that when you visit their website it still posts the original programming schedule.

I don’t think there was another children’s program that really replaced Batibot. There were those who tried (kudos to the people behind Sineskwela which still airs reruns on the Knowledge Channel) but they never had Batibot’s charm. I know there are others who believe that both Pong Pagong and Kiko Matsing should be considered as icons in the Philippine entertainment industry—it is just unfortunate that the Philippines don’t actually own them. 😦

ibalik si pong pagong at kiko matsing, mga orihinal ng batibot, para mapanuod ng mga bata, kabilang ang mga anaka namin.

First of all, Kiko Matsing was removed because of his similarities with Oscar the Grouch; same with Pong Pagong who had similarities with GMA. The real stars of Batibot though, were the Byap-byaps who were removed earlier (late-80’s) because they posed a threat to Ramon Revilla Sr’s campaign as Mayor of Cavite.

Batibot was ultimately cancelled when they realized that Kuya Bodjie always hung out at cafeterias around Visayas Ave in QC, and was being harrassed by former Batibot fans who “grew up”. To add to that, the screen wife of Kuya Mario showed her boobs in the film “Ang Babaeng Nawawala sa Sarili”, which angered many yayas who thought that Kuya Mario was “the ideal husband”..

mukhang kalokohan pero nawala sina kiko matsing tsaka si pong pagong dahil sa property daw sila ng Sesame Workshop “sesame street” (Children’s Television Workshop).
