Jinggoy Gets Scolded

According to a report from Newsbreak, Jinggoy apparently got told off by none other than his father, former President Joseph Estrada, when the latter found out about his son’s plans to make a movie midway in his term as senator.  Here’s the complete article I grabbed from the news site:

Erap to Jinggoy: ‘Stop Copying Me’

Thursday, 16 August 2007

Senator Jinggoy Estrada has obviously been following in his father’s professional and political footsteps, probably hoping that he, too, can make it to Malacañang. So dad first became an actor, then a long-time mayor of San Juan, then became senator, vice president, and finally President of the republic. The father, however, thinks Jinggoy is not doing it correctly. This was after the old man learned that his son, midway in his term as senator, was planning to make a movie.

What’s wrong with that, Jinggoy’s sympathizers might ask? Joseph Estrada, while senator in the late 1980s, filed Sa Kuko ng Agila with fellow senator Nikki Coseteng, a move that boosted his political stock.

The difference is that Erap’s film was a criticism of the continued stay of the US military bases in the Philippines. At the time, the Senate was about to vote on whether to renew the agreement between the two countries for the maintenance of US bases here. The Senate eventually voted “no.”

Sa Kuko ng Agila, the older Estrada reportedly told his son, was a film he could be proud of, not only for cinematic quality but for its political and social significance as well.

Jinggoy’s project, on the other hand, is an action-comedy that he intends to enter in the Metro Manila Film Festival in December. In other words, it’s not a film that could project him as a respectable actor, much less a lawmaker.

I couldn’t help but smile while reading this.  I never liked Jinggoy Estrada and I don’t think I can ever fathom WHY he thinks he’s a bankable action star.  Being his father’s son must have been tough on him that he seems to have planned his life according to his father’s exact footsteps.  As actors, the older Estrada looked loads better than Jinggoy and by local industry standards, had far more talent.  I had to watch one of Erap’s old movies (Geron Busabos) for a film class and I found myself, much to my surprise, pleasantly entertained.  I cannot say the same thing for any of Jinggoy’s movies.  I usually catch them on cable at home (I will not be caught dead paying to see ANY of his movies in the cinemas) with either one of these results: I immediately click the remote to another channel or make it the brunt of cruel and nasty jokes which my friends and I laugh over our stale margaritas.

I just hope that Jinggoy does not go ahead with his movie-making plans for a number of reasons:

1) He’s a senator for heaven’s sake (Whether we like it or not)! Can he just focus on doing his job? Please?

2) It is an effort to watch Jinggoy in fight scenes.  Nakakapagod kasi syang panoorin at nakakaawa yung mga stuntman nya.  Pretending to feel pain from crappy kicks and punches must be hard work.  Or he should at least go on a diet first–nobody wants to see a frumpy action star.

3) I personally believe that only Fernando Poe, Jr. (and Erap after seeing Geron) can get away with shooting an army of bad guys without getting a scratch.  Jinggoy doing it is just plain…nuts.  Normally, I root for the heroes and I cheer when they triumph over the bad guys unscatched.  With Jinggoy, I want him to get shot. BADLY.

4) He already tried making a movie with the very bankable Judy Ann Santos as his leading lady.  Although the actress will probably never admit it, Jinggoy was probably one of the worst career mistakes she ever made (the movie flopped big time).  But the actress was able to get back on her feet in no time because she has talent… Jinggoy has yet to star in a blockbuster film since then (or ever?). Go figure.

A trivia: Jinggoy vowed never to make a film with presidential son Mikey Macapagal-Arroyo (another action star wannabe).  Why not? I think they make the perfect pair and a movie which stars the two of them would probably rake in buckets just for the curiousity/tsismis factor.  I can just imagine The Buzz headlines: EXCLUSIBO: Mikey at Jinggoy nag-irapan sa set!  They can also throw in Mark Lapid to complete the ensemble.  They can all do a re-make of the abominable Tatlong Baraha complete with the now infamous “Saging lang ang may puso” line.  It would probably be another guranteed YouTube hit.
