AND YOU DARE CALL US “BARBARIANS”!!!

AKALA KO BA MATATAPANG KAYO?

I am saddened and angry that no one has stepped forward and claimed responsibility over Cris Mendez’s death. The doctor has disappeared and although the authorities were able to get the license numbers of the cars that brought Mendez to the hospital, the owners of these cars deny any knowledge or participation to the incident. One of the car owners admits to being a member of the Sigma Rho Fraternity but he said that a friend borrowed his car on the night of the incident…he declined to name his friend.

AND THEY DARE CALL US BARBARIANS!

Non-fraternity members are disdainfully referred to as “barbarians”. WHAT A JOKE! In an article on fraternities written by Luis Teodoro, he echoes the sentiments of non-fraternity members such as myself: that fraternities “are groups of club-wielding neanderthals ready to beat each other’s brains out. Fratmen are, in the public mind as well as among the vast majority of non-frat members in UP, the real barbarians, or worse.”

I know that some if not all of these fraternities have contributed some good to society. But whatever positive things they come out with, these are overshadowed with incidents such as the death of Mendez. Holding on to traditions for traditions’ sake… Ano ang ginagawa ng alumni nila? Or does the alumni, because of “brotherhood” and “loyalty”, use their positions of influence to get keep their members “out of trouble”?

And for those who actually blame Mendez: SHAME ON YOU! You’re no better than Gonzalez! No matter what his reasons were, he did not ask for this.

I hope all the UP fraternities agree once and for all to stop ALL the violence associated with their organizations. No set of rules from the Vice Chancellor’s office, no matter how good they are, will be able to eradicate fraternity violence unless the desire to stop comes from the fraternities themselves.

No amount of reasoning and arguments about “machismo”, “brotherhood” or “loyalty” can ever logically explain the deaths of the victims of fraternity-related violence: Dennis Venturina, Alexander Miguel Icasiano and now, Cris Anthony Mendez.

I am just enraged how people are silenced by this senseless killings. The Malu Fernandez brouhaha has elicited more response, to think that nobody died from reading her stupid article. If frats/sororities, fratmen and women are serious about ending this tradition of violence, my challenge is this: that your frat or sorority release a condemnation of these hazings and a commitment to a hazing-free initiation rites.

I have just read the official statemet of the UP Law Student body on the death of Mendez and this is what I have to say: cut the crap!! I have enough of your cry for temperance. This is the only statement I need to hear from you and your orgs: WE CONDEMN HAZING AND WE WILL NEVER CONDUCT HAZING FOR INITIATION RITES EVER AGAIN. Simple and clear, you don’t have to be a lawyer to say that!!!

edric: exactly my point. What happened to all that machismo?

clare: there’s nothing to understand. no matter how they explain it, it is just so illogical to intentionally inflict pain on someone else. We’re not a society of neanderthals.

anti-frat mom: Problem is most UP Law Alumni are actually members of these fraternities. there was a rumor in the peyups forum that a law professor actually said that the people who are reacting negatively about this issue are those who do not understand fraternities and their traditions. Hay naku… pilitin bang i-justify? And this is a law professor… nakakapanghina.

  8. September 9, 2007 at 3:01 pm

rey5q: Si Cris ba ang tinatawag mong bobo? With your poorly constructed comment, I can only surmise that you blame Cris for what happened to him… na “kabobohan” ang pagsali nya sa frat at ang dapat lang kaawaan ay ang mga nadamay sa “away ng mga bobo at astig”.

I am tempted to remove your comment altogether but in the interest of “free speech”, I am not deleting it.

Kung nagkamali man ako sa pagkakaintindi ng comment mo ay hihingi ako ng dispensa. Please feel free to revise your comment and explain yourself.
