Thoughts on the Estrada Verdict

The verdict is in. ERAP is GUILTY.

Naaawa ako kay Erap. Hindi dahil naniniwala akong wala siyang kasalanan pero naniniwala akong may bahid ng katotohanan ang pahayag ng kanyang kampo na ang hatol sa kanyang kaso ay politically motivated.  I support the court’s verdict but I keep hearing “unfair! unfair!” at the back of my head.  I keep thinking that he shouldn’t have been the first…

How many controversies did Former President Fidel V. Ramos get involved in? How many investigations about these controversies push through?

How many government officials have been accused of corruption? How many have been investigated? How many have been charged? Convicted?

How many issues have been thrown against Arroyo and her administration?  How many stories have been provided and published by respectable journalists and news agencies about the so-called “illegal” activities of the First Gentleman?

The former president seems to have become an unwilling guinea pig: living proof that no one is above the law and even the person who holds the highest position in the land will be held accountable. If this is true, then it might be safe to assume that Gloria’s days are numbered.

Did anyone notice that no one’s rejoicing over the verdict (except for Chavit Singson I guess)? In today’s news, there were a lot of teary eyed, angry, frustrated Erap supporters. There’s no “victory” rally; no confetti ridden mass gathering–there was an almost apathetic disregard for the verdict. People continued with their lives.  What happened to the people from EDSA 2?
